Well, I can't say what the 'most' pretentious is, but one of the words that I really think people should stop using (except perhaps in very specific circumstances), is 'utilise'... "Why do people use utilise when they could just utilise use?" My brother was the sort of person who would always use the more complex words where available, until I said that to him : P

I don't think words are pretentious. People are pretentious. And it's the pretentious way they use words... grrr... My vote goes for "skewered". A manager where I work was talking about "skewered investment figures". She meant "skewed". She was attempting to sound intelligent - *that* is pretentious. {PS why is this in the poetry category???}

I think it's pretentious to use legalese when you've never even thought of going to law school but I use it anyway. ;) I think anyone who accuses someone else of being sesquipedalian is being pretentious and ironically hypocritical.

Basically. I hear people say it a lot, and I don't think people use it correctly, when they say it. I think they say it just because it makes them sound good.....basically! :-)
