  • Just depends on how much workload the pilot(s) are under if they are listening to a particulary long traffic instuction by the controller they may just leave it for a while longer than usual. Othertimes if the terrain immediately around an airport is really not suitable for a forced landing should the engine(s) quit, if they retracted the gear too soon they would not be able to get it down quickly enough if they were at a lower altitude, so they will climb with the gear extended until an altitude is gained where they would have time to put it down again in the glide so it could land/crash on it's wheels! And sometimes they jus' plain old forget because they are after all only human!
