If he's God I don't know how there can be a higher being for him to pray to. In Matthew 14:23 "he went up into a mountain apart to pray" This is presumably praying in the sense of worshipping. In Luke 22:32 he says "I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not". This is praying in the sense of pleading. And according to Mark 14:35 he "fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him." This time the praying is a combination of worship and pleading. He wanted to be saved from the death that was facing him. The other possibility is that he is not God. That, one can say without contradicting Jesus because nowhere does he say that he is God.

Prayer is another word for conversation. Jesus conversed with His Father, thru prayer. It was spiritual conversation. Prayer is not just eyes closed, head down. Prayer is mental conversation that can happen day or night. In any activity, walking, driving, working. Prayer is a two way street. Its a conversation. Both parties speak, answer and ask questions. its a relationship. It can be vocal. You can hear Him speak to you. He sounds like He is standing behind you. The sound is in your mind. I am not making a theological doctrine from the verse at John 17:3. The only true God and Jesus are shown as distinct in this verse. The context of John1:1,2 show the same when it states that "the Word was with God" Also Col 1:15 refers to Jesus as "the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature" Rev 3:14 says the same about Jesus "the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God." The inter action between God and Jesus clearly show that they are 2 distinct individuals. At Jesus' baptism a voice came from the heavens. It was God's voice saying that Jesus was his beloved son. So for most of history, we couldn't talk to God. We needed an emissary, like Moses or a Levite, to speak for us and bring back the answer. That emissary had to purify himself first, lest he die too. That was the reason for the curtain in the temple: it separated us from the presence of God so that we wouldn't die. The Hebrews were not accustomed to talking to God in a familiar way. Jesus came and died for our sins so that we can be close to God and talk to God without an emissary. If we ask Jesus into our hearts, then He is in us and we are in Him. In this unique place, we are able to talk directly to God. But because this was something new, Jesus had to teach us how to do it. Don't say he was a god according to Christianity. Christians do not agree on this. Because someone is a "follower" of Jesus does not make him a god. Because they say the Lord's Prayer, as Jesus taught, does not make him a god.

Geez ya know, it's questionable about whether all the authors of the gospels believed that Jesus was God, or whether he ever even said he was, or if that aspect of Christianity had even been developed when the gospels were written...there's just too much confusion. Jesus said that we are all one, we're all the same and that we're all apart of a greater force (God, if you want to call it that), when we become Self-realized, we experience life as God (all loving, forgiving, compassionate, etc...), we realize there is no separation between us and this magnificent force, it's just a matter of tapping into it and discovering it. You will find this evident in other religions and basically ANY self-help/personal-development philosophy... this concept it said in many different way for the many different levels of understanding. Speaking of prayer, prayer is basically a form of getting in touch with the pure, positive energy that exists everywhere... it's like putting yourself in the flow. If you study other religions out there, you'll see a common pattern that most every philosopher or prophet has recognized, which is that humans battle the forces of the ego which separates us from the divine. The act of prayer is form of surrender and a way of moving the ego aside. Since Jesus was human, he participated in this act as well. Jesus was a human-being, just like everyone else. What he was saying, and what Christians don't get, is that we are ALL divine/Godly creatures. All of us. We need stop looking at it from a religious aspect, prayer is having communion with God. Imagine building a relationship with someone without talking!!, how would yo tell them how you felt, your problems or what you felt towards them etc. The bible tells us we those who believe in me (JESUS) are SONS OF GOD. This is the main reason, although there are many others reasons for praying including the power of prayer but returning to the question at the beginning, Jesus prayed because he needed time with his Father especially when he was weak, (GETHSEMANI)

This is the whole reason why Jesus died for us, so that, by repenting we can be forgiven, but this is only possible because Jesus payed the price on the cross. he payed for our sins. Before Jesus died for us the only way to be forgiven was through sacrifice and obeying the law which knowone was able to do. Sins mean "seperated from God" Sin is what seperates us from the presence of God.

Jesus and the Father together are God. Consider God like a last name. Jesus would pray to God because (1) This sets the example for man (2) Jesus in the flesh is vulnerable and needs constant faith in the Father to do his bidding. He prayed bec. he became a human. God becomes a son for salvation purpose. God is one. the Father, the Son and the Holy spirit. Humans sinned so God as spirit must become human. God cannot condemn sin in Spirit bec. God is Spirit. And the one (Adam) who sinned was in human form. Just like us who keep on sinning. Salvation comes from the Lord. So He must become us. IMO: God is not limited like a person, He is infinite and all-powerful. The parts of the Trinity are all God, but do not have to be all limited to the same consciousness - The parts of the Trinity can act and think independently. The benefit of this is that Jesus experienced life as a genuine human, learning and thinking and feeling just like the rest of us do. He was truly human.

Because when he was on the Earth he was a human being. Just like the kingdom of God is within every person but we still pray to God because we are living in flesh right now.

I don't know about you, but I talk to myself all the time.

A lot of what Jesus did sets an example to others for what is the right thing to do. So when he prayed, and people wrote about it in the Bible, then we get to read it and find out that it's the suggested thing to do in times of trouble, gratitude, or doubt.

The Bible teaches (and Jesus taught during his time on the earth as is documented in the Bible) that Jesus was "cut off" from his Father while he was here on this earth. He had to pray to his Father, just as we do. Therefore, Jesus prayed. This seems like a simplified answer but this is the most simply way to answer the question.

He says "I do not do this for my own purpose, but so that you may learn." He wanted to set an example. Another reason is that in his humanity, Jesus felt many emotions. Although he is God incarnate, he at many times felt fear, anguish, especially knowing the burden he was going to carry, these feelings were part of the suffering he had. So in his HUMANITY, it provided comfort for him to Pray to his father, who is his original "dwelling place" before all ages.

Jesus IS GOD, who is the Trinity - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, all in one. As the SON of GOD, He prayed to the Father.
