He trained to be a flight lieutenant during WWII, but the war ended before his training did, so he never saw combat.
-
Yes....first he was a Sailor in WWII and then a paratrooper post-war. (He jumped out of planes and I'm afraid to fly in them).

Yeah he was in the Air Force!

My father was a soldier, his father was a soldier, his father was a soldier... There is not a single gap until before the civil war.

Yeah he was in Vietnam.
-
No, he was a sailor in World War II and his ship was torpedoed and sunk in the Atlantic. Fortunately he was rescued, but he spent 3 years in Prisoner of War camps in Poland and Germany.
-
Yes, he was career US Air Force for 25 years and saw combat in Vietnam.

He "didn't want to carry a rifle in the mud", so when he got his draft notice in the mail the day after Pearl Harbor, he joined the Air Corps, the old name for the USAF. He was made a navigator on a C-47 cargo plane because he wasn't good at landing during training. After a burst eardrum, he had a bureaucratic job on Saipan, a pretty large island where there were still some Japanese in the jungle, but, unlike some guys, he was smart enough not to go out souvenir hunting and get himself killed.
-
No... but he was an officer in the NYPD.
-
Yes. My Daddy was in the Air Force during Vietnam. I never really heard the story, but I don't think he got drafted because he had a new family. I'm not sure. I know he was some sort of flight assistant and he did drops all over Europe. He doesn't talk about it much.

No. My father was a semi-truck driver. When WWII broke out, he went down to enlist. When they saw he was a truck driver, they turned him down, as the war effort would need civilians making and transporting items. His driving a truck was deemed more important than another body on the front lines.

No, he was a child during the 2nd World War, and he had to flee on his own from East Prussia (now part of Russia) to Northern Germany. He had his share of war experience. Both my grandfathers were soldiers. I did 15 months.
