  • You would be amazed how much noise the pulsing exhaust can make when it exits anywhere other than the muffler. An exhaust leak in the maniflold, catalytic converter, or associated pipes upstream of the muffler result in getting the fully auditory assault of every single exhaust pulse without the benefit of the sound-dampening properties of the muffler. Put another way, it's what engines are supposed to sound like. However, many people find the noise objectionable, hence the invention of the muffler. Some people love the sound, hence the "fart cans" and 'melon launchers' you see on Honda Civics, allowing you to technically have a muffler (satisfying local laws) yet not actually muffle. If you don't like the sound, or want to get an inspection sticker, repair the exhaust leak.
