  • Back in the pre-modern era, there were not as many people on planet Earth. Some of those people wanted to break out of mediocrity, so they would take risks, like Alexander the Great, trying to take over the world. Often times they would die accomplishing their task or shortly after, so that they never got to revel in it. So, this sort of behaviour was generally discouraged by society. So, the vast majority of people were happy to tend their bean fields or whatever, and then go on to pop out a dozen or so kids and then die of tuberculosis or whatever was in style at the time. But those days are long gone now. The bean fields are harvested by combines, the factories that make the machines that harvest the bean fields are fully automated, and the executives who make the decisions such as automating their factories are replaced by AI. Furthermore, there are so many people now that no one really cares if a bunch of people die from taking unnecessary risks. Therefore, society now rewards the risk takers, whether or not they are thoughtfully prepared. So, now, if you are wealthy enough, you can pay to have someone push you out of an aeroplane, push you off of a cliff, feed you a poisonous puffer fish, or take you up to the peak of the tallest mountain in the world. Maybe, if you are really really rich, you can even pay someone to fly you in a rocket to outer space. If you choose the Everest route, maybe you'll even be lucky enough to perish right near the top, where no sane person would ever go to retrieve your frozen corpse, so that you can become a landmark for other climbers who will talk about you for years to come. So wear something flashy, just in case. So, too long, didn't read: It's because there are too many rich people.

  • They like to climb and have a head for heights
  • Climbing Mount Everest is one of the world's most incredible and rewarding lifetime journeys.
  • Why would they 'climb' it is a better question. There have been roads to the top since I was a kid. Back in the 70's. Its hard to breathe up there.

Everest? Maybe you are thinking of Mount Evans, which has the highest road in North America going up to the summit. I assure you that Everest does NOT have a road going up to the summit, though. There is a road on the Chinese side that goes up to the base camp, but that's still hardly near the summit.
  • it's a challenge
