  • The idea is that you're supposed to taste the steak and appreciate the flavor and preparation, not mask them. If the ketchup flavor is what you really like, just eat cheap cuts prepared less skillfully at home.

  • You wouldn't get that reaction at Outback Steakhouse or Billy Joe Bob's Steakhouse/Tire and Auto center. Nine times out of ten, the "chef" doesn't know the difference between medium and medium-well. It's when you go to a fancy place with a real chef that they get upset when you put ketchup on a steak. The reason the chef gets upset is that they work hard to develop cooking methods and ways of seasoning their food to what they consider perfection. A good chef is also very selective about the meat and other ingredients that they serve to their customers. Putting ketchup or additional seasoning on your on your food implies that the chef's hard work, their art, if you will, wasn't good enough for you. Not only do many consider it blasphemous to do that to a high-quality piece of meat, it can also be taken as an insult to the chef.

  • I never did understand that sort of attitude at all. I worked as a chef for many years, and I always thought that the customer was paying for the meal they ordered, and if they wanted to put ketchup on it, oh well. It's their food after all. That is why we provided ketchup and hot sauce etc in the first place. I personally don't eat ketchup on a steak, but I always eat it on a burger.

  • a good steak needs NO condiments--especially ketchup! It's an insult!! use that on fries.
