  • Unclear. Probably the story is that something happened, someone thought whatever that was appeared odd, told someone else, and by the time the newspapers published the story it was already at least 50% poppycock. There are some people who explain the story with a fungus that grows on the ground and blooms when it gets wet, which might smell and look kind of like meat, or a flock of vomiting vultures. Personally, I've heard other stories about the blooming ground microfauna before giving people quite a fright, and I've never ever heard of flocks of vomiting vultures other than this one odd story, but, whatever the case, I'm sure someone somewhere ended up exaggerating at least a few of the details of the story.
