  • When I was in graduate school, (I was about 22 years old at the time), I was really struggling through the first lecture of a class in generalized topolgy (the mathematics of bending 2D surfaces in 3D, 3D volumes in 4D, 4D supervolumes in 5D, etc.). I stayed after class to talk to the teacher, and still felt completely lost. There was another student who stayed behind. After I was done talking to the teacher, I asked him if he was also waiting to talk to the teacher, and he said that he didn't need any help, because the class was easy for him. Surprised, I asked him why he was waiting around, and he said he was waiting for his mom to come pick him up, because he was only 14 and couldn't drive. I looked him up once, years later, and saw that he had become a math professor by the time he was 19 years old (to become a professor, one typically has to get a Ph. D., then complete at least two postdoctoral programs, so professors usually don't start a tenure track until they are in their early 30's, even if they are incredibly smart and well prepared). Anyway, good for him, but people like that frighten me.
