Diaphragm pumps are usually cheaper, but require more maintenance, so they are used in applications where they can be considered disposable. They can be run dry, so they make good cheap air pumps. They can also be run fully submersed in oil or other fluids, so they can be used in the medical field as a temporary heart replacement. And since the pumping action is simple and they can be made to be disposable, they are often used with corrosive fluids, where a gear pump or vane pump would be damaged.
