From what I gather listening and watching hours of documentaries of them. Karen was all about her voice for him, but he wanted her to look good to make himself look good.. and it blew up on Karen

Karen was mentally ill and back then the illness was not well researched or understood. The strained relationship *I think* was the stressor that triggered her mental illness was with her mother. Others just perpetuated it and manipulated and used her because she was talented and weak. But the blame lies with the mental illness and lack of proper treatment.
