  • Welcome! They don't exist anymore. Some questions are from the old Answerbag when they had downrating and I think +5 was for best answer which they no longer have either. I wasn't here then.

  • Welcome to the new Answerbag, have fun with your questions and answers. Linda is right, in the old days (long, long ago, on a planet far,far away) the old AB had a rating system where we could give from 1 to 5 points, if we liked/approved of the question or answer (it wasn't compulsory). Points were tracked by the site and used to form a "Points Leader Board", the more points you had - the higher it placed you on the board. Then one fine day the (idiot/moron)person sitting in the big chair decided to stir the pot and added the ability to "down rate" from -1 to-5 points. The trolls had a field day, anonymously taking away everybody's points, and we never knew who did it. So many of us took to adding the +5 inside our answers as well as giving points, so the person knew how we rated their entry. Which is why you'll see a +5 in some of the old stuff that's been brought back from the archives. This down rating caused such a problem that it led to a group of good people banding together to offset the negative numbers. They called themselves the "C.O.A.T.s" (Coalition Of Anti Trolling) (if memory serves me right). A lot of them added the acronym into their user name. When the trolls would attack someone and take away their points - the COATs swung in behind and showered that person with replacement points. Eventually AB was sold and the + 5 was dropped in favor of the Facebook style like/thumbs up worth 1 point, which has followed through here to the newest version of Answerbag and the negative vote has been dropped completely. .... And here endth the long winded AB history lesson for today, I hope it helps. : )
