1) I'll consider here only the passage from "child" to adult. Of course, there are some other stages such as "teenager". 2) My father is dead, not my mother. Even as an adult, even after my parents are dead, I shall remain the child of my parents all my life. This in the sense of descendency, which means genetic and educative influence. Note also that the word "child" in English and other languages has both meanings: "A child is most often defined as a young human being between birth and puberty; a boy or girl. The legal definition of "child" generally refers to a minor, otherwise known as a person younger than the age of majority. "Child" may also describe a relationship with a parent or authority figure, or signify group membership in a clan, tribe, or religion; or it can signify being strongly affected by a specific time, place, or circumstance, as in "a child of nature" or "a child of the Sixties."" Source and further information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Child 3) As I stopped studying and started to work, I could rent my own flat and was financially independent. From that moment, I felt the freedom to better control my life and make my own decisions. Three years before, as I left my parent's home to go studying, I had also acquired a big lot of independency, but they still payed my bills.

I got my girlfriend pregnant. That's a reality check that pretty much destroys any vestige of childhood in any young person. Had it happened just a couple years or so later, I would have been more responsible and prepared for it and it would have been a 'natural' extention of my adulthood.

I think on some level, no matter how old you are, you are always your parents' child and there will always be moments that you feel that way. After my mother died (I was 48) and my father needed care before his death when I was 54, I knew I had to be a total grown-up. There are times I liked it the other way better.

uh, eh... there havent been only one major turning point that made me realise that, but more like several moments that made me realise that I had become older. Like when I stashed my 15 tons LEGO Technic away, the first time I had sex, the first time I was drunk (happened when I was 15, it just didn't tempt me until then) and ironically when my ex broke up with me, because I knew I would never have become so attached to another person when I was younger..

"My earliest memory is of water. I was submerged in it. I had stepped off a dock into Clark Lake. Before my Aunt Rui jumped in after me, I had time to hit bottom- about three feet down- and look around. A bubble formed around my head and I could breathe in it. I was two and a half. I learned this much: adults couldn't breathe underwater, but a child could do anything. About four years later I held a paper bag above my head and jumped off a roof. I reached full speed and slammed into the ground. I learned this much: adulthood begins at six." -- Leo Kottke
