One above flood zone. haha I stayed just outside french quarter that was nice. I live in Lake Charles the best way is to check school ditricts usually the better school is, the better the neighborhood is.

try around laplace,la which is north of the bonne carre spillway..close enogh to the city but far enough away...

Mandeville, across Pontchartrain on the north shore. Not badly damaged by Katrina and enjoying full services and utilities. Start looking at Beau Chene, a gated community with golf courses and nicely controlled environment. Houses are very reasonable and come and go on the market, and some of them were custom-built with extra amenities.

garden district is nice...pricy though. Or up town.

You said you are relocating to NEW ORLEANS, Not NEAR New Orleans like these other commenters are thinking ! READ THE QUESTION ! The best area by far i think is uptown. It has an intimate and closeknit type of neighborhood feel i think you would love. check anywhere in the Garden district to upper and lower Carrolton.
