  • As of the census of 2000, there were 1,811 people, 666 households, and 496 families residing in the city. The population density was 288.9/km sq (748.8/mi sq). There were 713 housing units at an average density of 113.8/km sq (294.8/mi sq). The racial makeup of the city was 57.54% White, 40.20% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.83% Asian, 0.61% from Race (United States Census)other races, and 0.66% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.94% of the population. There were 666 households out of which 32.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.4% were Marriagemarried couples living together, 22.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.4% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 2.91. In the city the population was spread out with 23.6% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
