A dissecting microscope, or stereo microscope, has two eyepieces that provide slightly different viewing angles to each eye, which creates a three-dimensional visual of the sample. Cherubin d'Orleans, a Capuchin priest, constructed the first binocular microscope with two separate eyepieces in 1671.
