  • The idea behind the Global Positioning System (GPS) came from Roger L. Easton and his work with satellite navigation. Easton began working for the Naval Research Laboratory as a physicist in 1943 and contributed to its efforts to end World War II. He received the Navy Distinguished Civilian Service Award in 1960 for his Navy Space Surveillance System.
