  • Foam rubber is used in furniture, seat cushions and even beds. It is also a component in sports equipment and motorcycle seats. When exposed to the elements like rain, dirt and wind foam rubber is cleaned with as variety of products that can preserve the product while ridding it of dirt.

    Preparation

Before cleaning the foam rubber prepare it by removing the fabric outer layer (if there is one). Some foam rubber inserts have a nylon cover which can be unzipped and removed by hand. Other pieces of foam rubber will be exposed and can be cleaned as is. Remove any electrical devices, wiring, tape, nails and screws or other obstructions in or near the foam before you start cleaning it. Set the foam rubber piece on a sheet of plastic on a table top.

    Light Washing

Use a large bucket and a sponge along with a soft hair brush to clean your foam rubber with laundry soap and warm water. These tools will be less likely to tear or puncture the foam rubber. Since foam can crumble and come apart in pieces, using tools like this on older foram is often the only option. If the stain is very light, you may be able to use just water and a towel or rag. A sponge will help to blot up excess water and makes the drying process go much faster.

    Heavier Washing

If the foam is stained and soiled to the core, you may use a bathtub or washing machine without agitating the foam and let the material soak. To remove urine use vinegar. Try low pressure on a hose or shower attachment to rinse. Dry cotton towels can soak up extra water before air drying or using a hair dryer.
