Keeps the planet in blanket of air so that the temperature remains within a few degrees or tens of degrees between dark and light side, instead of hundreds of degrees different. Provides us with stuff to breathe. Gives sufficient pressure to allow liquid water which we rely on. So without it, we're shot, dried, fried, frozen, breathless, ... and quite quite dead!
