  • On average a commercial is about 30 seconds long.
  • Most commercials are based on a broadcast standard which averages to be 30-seconds in length. They can be up to a full minute. I worked in broadcasting so I know this.
  • That's a tough question because there are so many types of commercials. The short ads you see during a broadcast are sold in various time blocks, from 15 seconds, to 30 seconds to a full minute. However, on rare occasionas, blocksof up to two minutes might be sold for special advertisements. Additionally, while the conventional ad is a 30 or 60 second spot, infomercials of 30 minutes are also commercials and this makes the computation of "average" difficult. Product placement within shows turns the shows into extended adds and also makes the math difficult. On the opposite end, fleeting reminders, sponsorships and quick visuals (think the current omni finis imminent 2 second visual) drag the average length down. The general television product ad will be either 30 or 60 seconds but as viewers become more savvy about ads and more likely to turn conventional ones off, the format of ads will change to ensure te transmission of their content without our cynical filters kicking in.
  • I think most of the other answers have covered the question. It may be interesting to know that most television shows run for 44 minutes (not 1 hour) this is to allow time for commercials. Advertising agencies will buy time depending on the time the commercial is to air, and how popular the television show is. A good example is commercials aired during the news cost alot more because in theory more people are watching.
