Here's the info from the official Van Halen web site at http://www.van-halen.com/newsite/5150code.html 5150 comes from the California Code of the same name. And was the source of the album's title. Here's the actual code taken verbatim from the law book: 5150. When any person, as a result of mental disorder, is a danger to others, or to himself or herself, or gravely disabled, a peace officer (...) or other professional person designated by the county may, upon probable cause, take, or cause to be taken, the person into custody and place him or her in a facility designated by the county and approved by the State Department of Mental Health as a facility for 72-hour treatment and evaluation. (there's more after this, too.) Other intersting factoids about this: Eddie Van Halen uses (or used) amps called Peavey 5150 Halfstacks Eddie Van Halen's studio is called 5150.
