Remember that YDD was released in war time, and the patriotic motif was laid on with a trowel, with the film being slanted in that direction. But to paraphrase what Jack Nicholson said in A Few Good Men: "You can't handle the truth!" Most people prefer comforting blarney. Also, most movies are intended to be entertaining, and sometimes the dreary facts get in the way of a good story.
