Black Coffee, Words & Music by Sonny Burke & Paul Francis Webster, 1948; Recorded by Julie London, 1960. Here are the opening two stanzas (each 4 lines): I’m feelin’ mighty lonesome - haven’t slept a wink; I walk the floor from nine to four, and in-between I drink Black Coffee - love’s a hand-me-down brew. I’ll never know a Sunday, in this weekday room. I’m talkin’ to the shadow, one o’clock till four, And Lord, how slow the moments go, and all I do is pour Black Coffee - since the blues caught my eye. I’m hangin’ out on Monday, my Sunday dreams to dry. - - - - - I'm a part-time jazz pianist & vocalist, and I sing that song on some gigs!...It is very melodramatic - lends itself to LOTS of expression. And what about that big hit rock song in the early 1970's or so - "25 or 6 to 4"? GREAT song! I was in high school at that time and was crazy about that song - lyrics, melody and beat. Now, it's 20 after 3 PM here in L.A., and I must get back to work!!...
