I don't know that such a thing exists for me. Unless you consider that glass is made from molten silicates, which are contained in sand (aka stone). I've tried to harden my heart, but it never seems to work. Despite being broken, I pick up the pieces and with the help of some super glue and fond memories, wait, and brace myself for the next shattering blow.

Being betrayed so thoroughly that there is no feelings left. (Not me, just an example). Once I am through with someone though, I am done. Some people are sociopaths in which case they don't have a connection with their heart.

When you have had as many disappointing relationships as I have had.

I think it develops over time. People who get heartbroken go from feeling rejected to denial, to becoming a cynic, to being jaded, to becoming indeferent...when they just don't care anymore. That happens enough times, not only with being in love--just trusting the wrong people can create this cycle.
