Nina Simone is certainly one of them. I would have to think hard on that
-
Please don't take this the wrong way, but I don't know the colour of most of the singers whose songs I listen to. I hope Aretha Franklin is black, because I like her music, or Dionne Warwick.

Aretha Franklin is the best vocalist to live. Ever. I doubt anyone will ever take her place or gain her reputation, and if they do, I certainly hope they deserve the title. I also love Ella Fitzgerald, Whitney Houston and Nina Simone.
-
Natalie Cole; clear voice.
-
toni braxton, she has such a powerful voice that i wished she used it more often.
-
Etta James

Aaliyah was a great singer, but I'd have to say Beyonce Knowles is that little bit better!
-
She probably isn't my favorite of ALL time, but I enjoy Whitney Houston alot. Her voice is amazing. We need more like her today. I especially enjoy Erykah Badu, too. Her voice is very unique and her music is always enlightening to me.
-
Whitney Houston. She has a beautiful voice and I have always liked her songs.
-
Sade. Who else?
-
Billie Holiday
-
Anita Baker hasn't been mentioned so I'll mention her!
-
I vote for Tina Turner. She is an amazing woman and a good role model for women to not stay with an abusive male. She is "Simply The Best".
-
Whitney Houston back in the day. She has a beautiful voice.

Patti Labelle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Celine Dione. But seriously, Alicia Keys. Her piano playing wins her points with me.

Aretha Franklin. http://www.aretha-franklin.com/ No, wait. Big Mama Thornton. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Mama_Thornton No, wait. Bessie Smith. http://www.redhotjazz.com/bessie.html No, wait. Queen Latifah singing "When You're Good To Mamma." http://www.cswap.com/2002/Chicago/song/When_You're_Good_to_Mama No, wait! Marian Anderson, for her dignity and courage: http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/remember/1997/anderson_2-26a.html This question is apparently too hard for me. :( How can I leave out Minnie Riperton, Tracy Chapman, Etta James, Nina Simone, and (when she's in her right mind), Chaka Khan? Patti LaBelle? Nell Carter? BILLIE HOLIDAY? LATE PS: And I forgot the one- or two-hit wonders who may not qualify for "best of all time," but who made a big impression with, sometimes, just a single song: Sade ("Smooth Operator") Anita Baker ("Sweet Love") Toni Braxton ("Unbreak My Heart")

Diana Ross! ______________________ Her older stuff from the sixties and seventies is the da bomb! Some of her stuff from the eighties is cool, but unfortunately her voice aged very quickly and it now sucks. However, I still can't think of any chanteuse I'd rather listen to, than one of Diana's old recordings, not Madonna, not Patti Labelle, not Aretha... And there has been no one since that has brought so much glamour, class and style to rock/pop music.

But one that I can't remember the name of right now was the lead for a group called "The Toys", and listening to their recording of "A Lovers Concerto" used to just send me to another world altogether. http://www.last.fm/music/The+Toys/_/A+Lover's+Concerto
