• Willem De Kooning was a great painter. He knew all the tricks. If you look at one of his paintings from the mid-1970s, for instance, you will notice how varied his method of applying color onto the canvas is (you would need to see an original, though). He could create illusions of space, paint very expressive, and yet be in total control. His paintings are, for me, a visual parallel to Hard Bop Jazz. I love them.
