  • Nearly 33% (1/3) of the US population has herpes simplex Type 1. . It is the the most common cause of cold sores. Other causes are not actually cold sores they are lesions, caused by other things mostly immunity suppressing diseases like HIV/AIDS. . I can not find one instance of genetically linked cold sores. I did however find that many people have the right genes to cause Herpes Type 1 to activate and have cold sore outbreaks: http://www.webmd.com/skin-problems-and-treatments/news/20080131/6-genes-linked-to-frequent-cold-sores . The Herpes virus is still the cause, the genes only activate it. . Treatment options only treat for the pain and help to reduce the length of the outbreak - there is no cure.
  • Herpes Simplex can be triggered by stress. If you have a lot os stress you may find that seeing a therapist experienced in stress management may make a huge difference Also, there are some meds which you can take (by prescription) at the first sign of tingling and it works on your immune system to fight the virus. And some very effective topical creams (again by prescription) which work. Using both really minimizes these darned attacks!
