Let me get this straight, you drive up to a stop sign, the sign says "stop", you're asking me whether you have to stop or not?!? What is the make and model of the computer/motherboard? Is it a laptop or desktop? If you can only have 1GB of RAM, it must either be an older computer or you're confused (I'm guess the latter) :-P

Incidentally, there are much better forums to get technical assistance on than AB. When you have specialized questions it is better to ask them in specialized forums. You could try ubuntuforums.org for example.

Dude I'm new here so take this info at your own risk. But I honestly believe that your processor or CPU can only handle that 512mb pf ram if you want to go higher swap out your CPU. Do that by either reading your owners manual and finding out processor you have or simply go to start on your desktop move your pointer to your computer icon right click go to properties read info on right hand side of that pop up window and get a new processor
