The best gift you can ever give someone is a memory. Don't get hung up on stuff as it in the end is still just stuff. Memories last forever. Ask your friend if there is anything that she has always wanted to do (within reason) and do that.

As someone who recently got married - if you're not going to go in with several buddies and splurge on a giant gift, just buy anything from the registry. What ends up happening is the couple spends money buying things left over from the registry, so not only are you buying them a cool gift they want, you're saving them the money they would have spent buying it for themselves.
