  • This is a more complicated question that it sounds like at first. If you are a guitar major, you hopefully should learn about all aspects of music theory as applied to guitar no matter which one you choose. You will also take a lot of other music classes such as theory, music history, arranging, conducting, etc. that will enhance your understanding of the guitar. Also, some schools offer a guitar major course that covers both classical and jazz, as well as rock. There are two considerations you must think about. One is "what would you like to do for a career in music" and then determine which method of study would best serve your goal. For example, if you want to be a big band arranger or a session muician, you should probably study jazz guitar. If you want to teach or be a concert performer, then classical guitar might be best. If you want to work in a rock band, then probably jazz or rock studies, if your want to be a Renaissance or Baroque performen, then classical guitar. Get a book that lists careers in music, and then try to be more specific about what you want to do other than just learn guitar. Knowing this will give you some clues which way to go. The other consideration is if there is a specific school that you would like to attend. When choosing a college, sometimes you need to evaluate the "overall" experience and what attending that particular college can do for you, rather than just looking at the guitar program. If you choose a school for the merits of the school of the merits of the music department within that school, then you will study whatever type of guitar course they offer. Once you learn guitar at a highly professional level, it is pssible that you can easily dapt to other styles. As a professional guitarist, it would be nice if you could play a variety of styles equally well. To wrap up, I would have to say that you should not enroll in a college until the answer to your question comes to you on it;s own. When you are ready to begin studying guitar at that level, you will know instinctively which way you want to go. If you don't know this yet (which you probably don't at this point), you need to do some more soul searching, some more reasearch, and some more quiet thinking and contemplating. Good luck. Keep in touch and please let me know how it goes for you.
