    The causes of narcolepsy are currently unknown, or I should say there are theories but nothing has been proven. There is a hereditary component, but then again some people with it have no relatives that have it. Some researchers believe it is caused by damage to the amygdala. Short answer is no one knows.

    There are hla types that pre-dispose a person to get narcolepsy....some evidence points to an autoimmune process. Most people with classic narcolepsy have a certain HLA type and a depletion of hypocretin/orexin cells in their hypothalamus. There is a better explanation of this at the Stanford University Sleep Disorders website.

    My daughter started getting symptons of cataplexy AFTER getting Mononucleosis and testing positive for the Epstein Barr virus when she was 9. We did NOT know what cataplexy was until asked if she fell down when she laughed or cried when she was diagnosed at 19. We blame that illness, because it was the start of her having to sleep excessive amounts until she took meds to help.
