The law may require it. At the very least, you should have some formal training in what the accepted wisdom is about the ethics of drinking on the job, accepting drinks from customers, and how to handle emergencies like drunk customers and holdups.

As far as making the drinks, I'm not concerned. However, on knowledge of laws, and how to handle drunks, emergencies, etc... it would probably be a good idea.

I guess if you want to please the customer you should know what the hell you are serving them. You knwo so when I order a martini you don't give me a scotch and soda. So yes some training is required. The most important reeason is so you can be a responsible bartender and so you are not charged with some criminal offense involving too much alcohol. You should be trained in what the law requires of you.

No. I dont think a license is needed to be a bartender. All a license is, is just another way to tax the individual. Just another way for the city, county, or state to get more money out of a person. In Texas, I dont know about other states, but here I can go get a license without any experience at all. So a license doesnt mean anything as far as I can see except that the state has taxed you again. My ex owns a bar in Dallas and she can get anyone a license. You do have to attend a class but there is not much to it. I think that is more a formality than a real need. The experience of how to handle individuals, mixing drinks, all that goes with being a good bartender comes from being behind the bar. They can run you through scenario after scenario in a classroom but every situation is different and every customer is different.

They give licenses for that? Here in Texas you just have to take an online test & an hour long course.
