The record belongs to Eric Dickerson of the L.A. Rams who rushed for 2,105 yards in 1984. Barry Sanders is second with 2,053, Terrell Davis is third with 2,008, and O.J. Simpson is fourth with 2,003.

OJ fumbled the ball half as many times and averaged over 10 more rushing yards every game than Erik Dickerson in reality OJ SIMPSON's 1973 season is far better than Erik Dickerson's 1984 season and Jim Brown 1963 is the second best in terms of rushing yards. In 1973 OJ Simpson Ran for more yards than Larry Csonka and Mercury Morris Combined, Simpson was the Babe Ruth of his era. Remember in 1973 there were only 14 games OJ averaged 143 rushing yards per game (more than most teams do) while Dickerson averaged 131.6 rushing yards per game Dickerson fumbled the ball 14 times while OJ only fumbled the ball 7 times. If you take OJ's Average of 143 Rushing yards per game and multiply it by 16 (the number of Games in a Modern day NFL season as of 1978) you get 2290 yards rushing which is far more than Dickerson's 2105 yards rushing.

But I would Argue OJ Simpson's 1973 season is the second best season for a running back the best would be OJ Simpson’s 1975 season because not only did he rush for 1817 yards rushing but got 426 yards receiving as well, getting 2243 yard from scrimmage in just 14 games and he broke Gale Sayers record for TD's in a season rushing for 16 TDs and caching 7 ( he led his team in TD receptions and had more TD receptions than John Stallworth and more than Erik Dickerson got in his entire career) Simpson led the league in every category most carries, highest yards per carry and longest run (88 yards) which came against the super bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers in week 2 Simpson ran for 227 yards, the most a Steelers defense had ever allowed and the fact that it was against the Steel Curtin ,the Greatest Defense of all time made his performance very impressive . If you take 129.8 and multiply it by 16 it would mean he would have 2077 yards rushing. If you take 160 (yards from scrimmage per game) and multiply it by 16 you get 2560 plus he would score a total of 26 TD's. Put him on a decent offense and give him a defense that could actually get the ball back and he would do even more. OJ SIMPSON'S 1975 SEASON IS THE GREATEST SINGLE SEASON PERFORMANCE OF ANY PLAYER IN NFL HISTORY.

RUSHING YARDS PER GAME IN A SEASON
    1. O.J. Simpson+ 143.1 1973 BUF 14 game season
    2. Jim Brown+ 133.1 1963 CLE 14 game season
    3. Walter Payton+ 132.3 1977 CHI 14 game season
    4. Eric Dickerson+ 131.6 1984 RAM 16 game season
    5. O.J. Simpson+ 129.8 1975 BUF 14 game season
    6. Jamal Lewis 129.1 2003 BAL 16 game season
    7. Earl Campbell+ 128.9 1980 HOU 16 game Season (MISSED GAMES NEVER REACHED 2000)
    8. Barry Sanders+ 128.3 1997 DET 16 game season
    9. Jim Brown+ 127.3 1958 CLE 12 game season
    10. Terrell Davis 125.5 1998 DEN 16 game season

Also, don't forget Hershel Walker holds the professional football record for single-season rushing yards with 2,411 yards in 1985, averaging 5.50 yards per attempt in 18 games. Even if it was the USFL, it is still a record nonetheless.
