When you make two slices of toast, you use both slots, but when you make just one, there are arrows indicating you should use "this" one slot. Why? Is it the alpha slot? Does it get hotter? What difference does it make?

I think the thermostat takes its reading from that side, and w/o a piece of toast in there for a normal (from the toaster's viewpoint) toasting experience, the reading would be off, leading to raw or burnt toast.
