if they stay in the 64x64 format nothing is wrong - but in the real world if everyone did that it will slow the servers greatly

I read the staff talking about this somewhere, basically, the animated avatars dramatically slowed down the site, when used everywhere, so they limited them to profile pages, and friends list, to keep the site as fast as possible. I believe it was an old blog where I read this...

Animated avatars (animated GIFs) require multiple pictures to animate, AND, therefore, require processing time to run. AB has enough problems keeping the site running relatively quickly with thousands of users asking, answering, and commenting on thousands and thousands of questions and answers. (Enough so that there are complaints at how long some things take.) They've allowed them in your profile, meaning when anyone looks there, they can see the animations. And, according to a prior answer, they allow them in friends' lists. If they allowed them on EVERY page that a users' profile may appear, it could cause a lot of problems, slowing down the processing of the servers. One or two animated images is one thing... 15-20 or MORE per page is something else, entirely.
