Well it should really depend on the type of person you should refer to as "dude". There are many other people other than Matthew McConaughey who refer to anyone especially girls/women as a "dude". To my knowledge, I believe there's a word instead of "dude" for women; which to my best I believe is "dudet".

    I think that if you're a teenager,
    sure call anybody a dude,
    but when you're older,
I think it's weird to call girls dudes.

    But I'm a girl,
and I call other girls dude all the time,
I call my teacher, grandparents, principles, etc, dude all the time. ((:
but I'm a teenager, so who cares.

I address anyone I know as "dude". I don't really care if you call me dude. I know a guy called "Marilin". Names don't really matter with gender anymore, it seems, so why should nicknames or things like "dude" or "mate", whatever those types of names are called.

    Hello anon77. Welcome to AnswerBag!

According to the authorities at my house. (The grand-kids) It is perfectly acceptable to refer to either sex as "dude". It is considered as a term of endearment or camaraderie.

Conversely,(or not) the term "dudette" is also considered the same. Go figure.
