My grandma got thru it and I guess she decided to "enjoy life when you can". At 57 she sold her house, then she and her boyfriend each bought full-dressed Harleys and hit the road for a few years.

Some people that went thru it save every penny they got...it's like a fear of some kind. My grandma had it bad too but I guess she just wanted to live life to the fullest.

She still had plenty of money left in the bank, and she made smart investments.

Yes. I lived next to a retirement community in the 1980's and everyone I met had lived through that time. They valued the dollar bill, not the credit card. They took care of what they had- it had to last because they weren't so sure they could afford to replace it. They lived within their means and most didn't trust the stock market. They saved and had money stashed in jars, teapots, mattresses and made sure if they have a fortune- to spread it around in several banks so it would be insured up to 100K. And, they didn't waste money on things like gadgets.

Yes, I know it did in the case of my mother's family. My mm was born in 1931. She grew up in a large household with one wage. THings were stretched to the limit. Nothing was wasted.
She passed that on to us. We were not allowed to tear paper off presents. We had to get it off carefully, refold it, and store it for reuse.
We recycled Christmas cards into Christmas decorations the next year.
I still have trouble tearing paper off presents. It was ingrained into us.
