It is mis-named. All that a knuckle ball is is a pitch that you release with your fingertips all at the same time. The ball, then, has no spin. It is effected by wind, humidity, and gravity. No one knows where it is going to go. Hitters hate it.
As far as I know, its a ball thats more or less "shotputted" toward the catcher. It has little if no rotation,, and can be very hard to hit. It drops very sudden.

If a batter swings & misses at strike 3 and the ball hits the ground, the catcher must tag the batter or throw to first. Why?
