  • John Wayne was not just a western guy. He also did the war movies like Green Berets, and was great in the comedy Donovan's Reef which is still one of my favorite movies.
  • I really like John Wayne movies and I've asked myself the same question. With the exception of "The Shootist" it's essentially the same character over and over. So where's the mystique? I think some of it's in the story but most of it is that John Wayne is always the leader, the honest, forthright, bigger than life hero that defines life as either right or wrong with no gray areas and does to the villian what the audience would want done to the villian. His movies also have a formula, Humorous introduction. Foundation of the story "The Brawl" There MUST be a barroom fight. Except in "Blood Alley" the confrontation was verbal with Lauren Becall. Meat of the story, back and forth fight the bad guys. Ending: Even if he does get killed the ending is either upbeat, inspireing or happy for someone. Donovans's Reef is top notch.
