64 squares, an 8 by 8 grid. You can also make: 49 2x2 squares 36 3x3 25 4x4 16 5x5 9 6x6 4 7x7 Add the 1 8x8 So in total: 204 You don't need to count them all, each value is just a progression of square numbers.
