Question

Help answer this question below.

I have been drinking spirits for quite awhile now, I suppose I would consider myself a "functioning alcoholic", on average I will drink a bottle of whisky an evening and not feel too awful in the morning. Is it dangerous to just stop?

It is not dangerous to stop drinking in some capacity, but you might want to ease yourself off. Do NOT stop drinking abruptly. In some more serious cases, alcohol withdrawal can cause some disturbing physical side effects. These can include involuntary twitching, shortness of breath, feeling like you're going to die...just the general sort of malaise that comes with any physical withdrawal symptoms. In the most serious of cases, abruptly stopping alcohol consumption can cause seizures.

So, long term, it's a great idea to quit drinking. Your liver will thank you. But if on average you are drinking a bottle (flask? a fifth?) of whiskey every evening, try and ease yourself off the sauce. Don't put yourself through unnecessary measures of misery.

    Best of luck to you.

Ween yourself off, lower the amount of "spirits" you drink over a period of time.

Seek out medical help as well. There are new drugs out there that are designed to help you stop drinking and they work!

    Good luck

No, stopping will probably save your life. What is dangerous is to continue your daily consumption, especially at that level. I know several people that have had success with Alcoholics Anonymous. Give it a try and good luck to you.

Yes, do not stop abruptly. As several others have already said, you could suffer from some really serious withdrawal. As Ms. Fort. said, the shortness of breath, sometimes hard twitching, etc. could be a major problem. But, seeing your response to her, you could be like a friend of mine from several years back. He quit alcohol cold turkey, (after drinking about a case of beer and several ounces of spirits a night), and it didn't hardly phase him. He did it for a woman.
But, and this is a HUGE but, he was the EXCEPTION, not the rule. Do ween yourself, and possibly talk to a Dr. or AA, so someone can help monitor you. I'm with everyone else, Good Luck!

Hey man short sweet and honest, the statement "Do NOT stop drinking abruptly" is as insane as drinking that much. If you need help with the physical side e-mail me and I will put you in touch with people that can help.

In the last year I have personally known 6 people die from their alcoholism. They were friends. They were good people. You are too and it can be done.

PLEASE, I AGREE WITH THE STATEMENT ABOVE, STOP, DO THIS WITH A DOCTOR MONITERING YOU, SO IF YOU BEGIN TO SUFFER EXTREME WITHDRAWS, YOU WILL GET MEDICAL HELP YOU NEED!! Sorry about the caps, but in some cases withdraws can be very dangerous, this is why in the hospital, when an alcoholic has a medical emergency, they have to treat the addiction/withdraws as well.

Alcohol Withdrawal symptoms include but are not limited to:

    Sweating or Rapid Pulse
    Increased Hand Tremor
    Insomnia
    Nausea or Vomiting
    Physical Agitation
    Anxiety
Transient Visual, Tactile or Auditory Hallucinations or
    Illusions
    Grand Mal Seizures

Stopping will probably save your life, but after such a heavy reguler intake i would see your doctor and get some advice.
Or go to an AA meeting they are all people that have been and are where you are and can help you to get through what will be a difficult but worthwhile time ahead

yes, you need to be careful when you are detoxing. Many go into seizures when they are without the drug/ alcohol. Call my friend, Steve. He is a certified addictions counselor, he can help you through it without cravings and in a controlled environment. 970-247-7753

Some people lack the enzymes to detoxify alcohol and will therefore not suffer a hangover. The toxins in alcohol build up in these people and then a person can suddenly die because of these toxins.
In your case it is probably dangerous to stop and far more dangerous not to. If you need medical help for withdrawal, please get it. Withdrawal from alchol is fatal more often than withdrawal from heroin. If you are physically addicted, please get as much help as you can and listen to people who are successfully recovering.

I would like to share the most easiest, effective and inexpensive way of quitting alcohol. (Also without any withdrawal symptoms).

My husband was an alcoholic for over 7 years. He started the spiritual practice of chanting the name of God and within 2 months he noticed that he no longer had the urge to drink. He is completely healed now and drinks occasionally during social functions. Go thru this site http://www.spiritualresearchfoundation.org/spiritualresearch/mentalhealth/addiction/index.php

You know you can pretty much do what ever it is you want and drink as much as you want. But it is you and only you that can make that detirmination. I used to pack away two bottles a night every night for 10 months out of the year. I was a Diamond driller in North of Sixty, and hard work and hard drinking were the way things worked. Every one did it and on night shift we would bring a totty to have for last coffee break. And as long as we were bringing in the footage and there were no fuck ups we just carried on like we always did. You got to remember we lived in isolated camps for months at a time and it was damn hard work, and the owner knew that we were making him rich. Drinking was in many ways a occupational hassard. That was a life time ago, I don't drink any more but I don't drill any more either, but with drinking to much was detirmined by how many fuck ups a guy started to have, and he was cut off, or cut back on their ration of whiskey, Bushmills it was
