Question

Help answer this question below.

I found a 1996 740i BMW for sale, and the owner told me that the car had a recall on the engine and the dealer swapped the engine out with a new one. Will it be reliable in the long run, or is this model known for problems?

The Nikasil engines were prone to premature failure. (Nikasil was a type of alloy used in the manufacture of these engines. Differences in qualities between unleaded fuel in the USA and fuel used then in Europe accounted largely for these failures in the USA cars).

Ask your seller to provide you with proof of the engine replacement, i.e., a BMW Service Dept Repair Order/Receipt.

The BMW 4.0 liter 8-cylinder engines are powerful, refined, and robust. However, vigilant maintenance is important. Regular oil changes are vital. Ask to see this documentation, too.
