Help answer this question below.

If Steven can mix 20 drinks in 5 minutes, Sue can mix 20 drinks in 10 minutes, and Jack can mix 20 drinks in 15 minutes, how much time will it take all 3 of them working together to mix 20 drinks?

    Why do you flip the 11/30 answer to 30/11 to get the answer

    Steven can do the job (mixing 20 drinks) at the rate of 1/5 per minute, Sue does 1/10 per minute, and Jack does 1/15 per minute.

    Working together, each minute they can do
    1/5 + 1/10 + 1/15 = 6/30 + 3/30 + 2/30 = 11/30 per minute.

    So the whole job will take them 30/11 = 2.73 minutes.

    To elaborate on xprofessor's answer:

    1 job = 20 drinks

    Steven:
    1 job in 5 minutes (1/5)
    or 6 jobs in 30 minutes (6/30)

    Sue:
    1 job in 10 minutes (1/10)
    or 3 jobs in 30 minutes (3/30)

    Jack:
    1 job in 15 minutes (1/15)
    or 2 jobs in 30 minutes (2/30)

    That totals to 11 jobs in 30 minutes (11/30) or 220 drinks in 30 minutes. So to find the time it takes to complete a single job (20 drinks) we divide the time it takes to finish 11 jobs by 11:

    30 minutes / 11 jobs = X minutes / 1 job

    30 / 11 = X

    X ~ 2.73

    So if they work together it takes 2.73 minutes to mix 20 drinks.
