  • I don't know anything about home improvement; however, when my mother asked me the same thing, we went to Home Depot and got A LOT of help from them. From the tools to the material (we used Granite) and they really gave us the 101 on that. It also depends on how extensive of a project this is going to be. Are you thinking about cutting your own tiles (if you even need to cut individual tiles, you may just want to shape a big marble slab (looks really nice and luxurious), etc. Hope this helps.
  • Depends on the material of the counter top. Marble is a pecialist job but ordinary work tops are fairly easy. The tricky bit is if you are joining two together then you need to decide whether to joint them straight edge to straight edge or whether to mitre them. Wickes Builders supplier have a helpful downloadable fact sheet you might find useful. See this link... http://www.wickes.co.uk/pcat/webtv I am a female and have never fitter a worktop before, but last year I fitted 3 in my kitchen, including cutting the holes for the appliances. All I used was a drill to put a pilot hole big enough to get the jigsaw into it and took my time cutting carefully around a template drawn onto the top with a pencil. You will need a screw driver and screws suitable to secure the work top to the base cupboards and possible joining strips. If you need to cut the length you will need a decent sharp saw. You will need a decent clear silicone sealant which you will need to spread around the cut edges to prevent water seeping into it and swelling the wood, before you put the sink or hob into it. If I can do it, you can! Good luck.
