Question

Help answer this question below.

My 3 year old male Scherperke. Has just started pacing and panting for hours on end. Has a poor appetite but is drinking water okay. Could this be a dog in heat as a female poodle has moved in next door. Advice appreciated thank you

If your dog is an not neutered and there is a bitch in season that he smells, yes it could be related. However, there are other signals he would be giving if THIS is the reason for his distress.

Generally, a fair amount of whining, specifically when he is "scenting" her. Scenting would be...you've taken him out for a potty or walk, he moves about, nose in the air and perhaps with his upper lip slightly curled, VERY distracted from everything he normally cares about outside, and eventually "zeros" in on sniffing the direction he is receiving the strongest scent of her from.

If you have a fenced in yard he might move to the side of the fence closest to HER, and paw or even try to dig under it to get to her, if he's on lead, he might try to pull you in that direction.

I'd go introduce myself and ask if their female might be in heat. If not, I'd get this dog to the vet, there are too many different things that it could be, that you wouldn't be able to fix. You can take his temp, 100.4 to 102.2 is normal for a dog...but be aware there can be something wrong, and the dog may not have an elevated temp!

I personally wouldn't take the chance of waiting around.
