What's the superstition behind a black cat crossing your path?

    It could also be that black cats were supposedly witches' familiars and so if one crossed your path, either the witch was spying on you or you had been cursed.

    In te Romany tradition, it is beleived that black cats were symbolic of future luck. Hence, if a black cat is coming toward you it is bringing you luck, if it is going away from you, it is 'taking' it away.

    In my understanding, all cats were held in fear during Middle Ages, because cats thrived when humans were dying (rat population). Being opportunistic, they would sometimes latch onto sole survivors of entire families, often women, hatching the "witch's familiar" legend.

    And every body looks better in black <wink>, so black cats were considered esp adept at this practice.

    Black cats represent darkness or mystery. Well at least black does. Anyways maybe because of the mystery you don't know of what is going to happen so it is considered bad luck.
