Question

Help answer this question below.

I was sent a letter by an attorney stating that I have "no authority to keep" my copy of my son's birth certificate, that it is his "private property", and that he is "entitled to have it in his possession". Am I not entitled to a copy? I'm the mother.

The birth certificate that was issued at your son's birth is your son's property.

Are you entitled to an additional copy of the certificate? This depends on the state. In most states, the answer is yes, you can obtain a copy of his birth certificate (or the birth certificate of any descendent's).

Note: This answer assumes your son has now reached the age of majority.

If it's your attorney, and you have the right to have a copy of everything he does ~ Your the one flipping the bill, but he may need a copy for his records.
