depends on your budget.. if you really want, i recommend B16A engine, they're common engines if you like racing. but if you want to take it to the next level, i'd go for a K20 engine. H22 is good too but for a 1996, i wouldnt recommend it, its expensive.. lolz.. just get a k20..

there are many options since it is a civic shell. there are the B-series motors, which is pretty easy to do. (b18c5,b18c1,b18b(nonvtec),b16) or the new thing is to swap in the k-series(k20a2,k20a3,k20a,k20z1) alot more expensive than the b-series.

it all depends on your budget. here's a site that could help with your engine swap.

a true h22 will not fit in a 96 civic. ive seen this done once and im not even sure if it was in a civic. it might have been in an accord. but anyway you have to make a frakenstein h22 in order for it to work in a civic. it wont be all h22 parts. might have a different head or something else. but i know for a fact a complete h22 motor will not fit in a 96 civic.

its kind of a hot topic of what to put in a civic as far as a motor goes. many people like the b series motors (b18c5, b20, etc.) which are found in integras. or other people like to take a d series motor which is already in most civics and mod those till no end (turbo, cams, port and polish, etc.) its just a matter of personal preference and what youre going to do with the car (drag, autocross, etc.).

For a 96 Civic, I'd recommend the B18C5. It bolts in relatively easy, and produces decent power.
