My '96 Honda Civic has the stock motor with 172,000 miles on it. I want to street race the car - will I need to replace the engine, or will the original stand up to major modifications?

    1- street racing is stupid... period.
    2- that engine isn't going to last much longer even if it's just used as a daily driver. i'd save up for an engine that you really want in it and the few bucks to race at the local track. well worth the entry fee. plus you get the time slip so you get bragging rights over some wannabe talking trash that's never ran a real race.

    First of all.... Don't street race. Secondly, 172k miles is a lot, you should probably upgrade the motor if you plan to race. With that kind of mileage, the stock internals and seals will not take much more abuse. As for the modifications, a turbo or supercharger will not withstand much boost given the age. Upgrade to a B16 or B18 DOHC Honda/Acura motor.
