I understood that the lens of the eye had no blood supply and got all of its nutrients from tears. If this is so then how (and why) do eyes become bloodshot?

The lens isn't the part that gets bloodshot... the whites of the eyes do. I've never heard that about the lens not having a blood supply... interesting. -
